1973

1973 trat Sinatra seinen Rücktritt vom Rücktritt an und kehrte mit einem neuen Album auf die Bühne des Showbiz zurück. Das gleichnamige TV Special wurde am 18. und 20. September 1973 in den NBC Studios aufgenommen.

Die Eröffnungsnummer der Show ist „You Will Be My Music“ und Sinatra verfehlt so manchen Ton dabei. Die folgenden Songs werden besser, der erste Höhepunkt der Show ist jedoch zweifelsohne das Saloon-Song-Medley aus „Last Night When We Were Young / Violets For Your Furs / Here’s That Rainy Day“. Wenn man mal die billige Kulisse außer Acht lässt ist es wahrhaft schade, dass Sinatra dieses Medley nie für ein Plattenprojekt einspielte.

Der zweite Höhepunkt folgt direkt dem ersten: ein Medley mit Special Guest Gene Kelly, bestehend aus alten Liedern, alten Choreographien und viel Nostalgie und Witz.

Sinatra beendet die Show mit drei Liedern aus seinem damals aktuellen Album. „Let Me Try Again“ klingt besser als ein Jahr später im „Main Event“, gut gelingt ihm „Send In The Clowns“ und die Fehler von Beginn der Sendung widerfahren ihm beim Reprise von „You Will Be My Music“ nicht mehr.

Ursprünglich sollte die Show mit „Come Fly With Me“ und „Noah“ beginnen. Die beiden Songs sind wohl auch eingespielt worden, letztendlich wurden sie aber doch nicht für das Special verwendet und auch auf der DVD (wo man sie bestimmt als Bonus schätzen würde) sind sie nicht zu finden.

1973

1973 was the beginning of Sinatra’s retirement from retirement and he came back to showbiz with a new album. The eponymous TV special was taped on September 18th and 20th of 1973 at the NBC studios.

The opening number of the show is “You Will Be My Music” and Sinatra misses quite a few notes. On the following he gets better, the first highlight of the show is beyond doubt the saloon song medley “Last Night When We Were Young / Violets For Your Furs / Here’s That Rainy Day”. Discounting the trashy setting, it is a real pity Sinatra never recorded this medley for a album project.

The second highlight follows directly to the first one: a medley with special guest Gene Kelly, consisting of old songs, old choreography and much nostalgia and wit..

Sinatra closes the show with three songs from his then actual album. “Let Me Try Again” sounds better compared to the version he does a year later on the “Main Event”, he succeeds with “Send In The Clowns” and the opening song bobbles of “You Will Be My Music” aren’t there any more on its reprise.

Originally the show was to open with “Come Fly With Me” and “Noah”. Both songs most likely were taped but weren’t used on the final cut of the TV show and they aren’t on the DVD either (although they would have been a nice bonus).
