Sinatra & Friends
1977

The TV special was taped on April 6th and 7th of 1977 and Sinatra does the show together with a potpourri of different guests: Dean Martin, John Denver, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Robert Merrill, Loretta Lynn and Leslie Uggams. The idea of singing duets with his friends is a very good one. But it doesn’t work.

Most solo appearances of the guests are appalling and encourage the viewer to overleap these scenes. But unfortunately, the duets aren’t better either. The opera baritone Robert Merrill is an absolute miscast for a terzet with Dean Martin on “The Oldest Established”, Loretty Lynn lacks any sense of rhythm and beat on “All Or Nothing At All” and “My Kind Of Town” with Tony Bennett sounds simply dull and bleak.

Solely “I Get A Kick Out Of You” with Natalie Cole convinces and also the “September Song” with John Denver sounds more or less good – as long as one hasn’t the focus on Denver too much.

A special with scarcely a highlight.

Sinatra & Friends
1977

Das TV-Special wurde am 6. und 7. April 1977 aufgenommen und Sinatra bestreitet die Show mit einem Potpourri der unterschiedlichsten Gäste: Dean Martin, John Denver, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Robert Merrill, Loretta Lynn und Leslie Uggams. Die Idee an sich, zusammen mit seinen Freunden Duette vorzutragen ist eine sehr gute. Nur klappt sie bei diesem Special kaum.

Die meisten Solo-Auftritte der Gäste sind schrecklich und animieren dazu, diese Szenen zu überspringen. Nur leider sind die Duette selten besser. Der Opernsänger Robert Merrill ist eine absolute Fehlbesetzung für ein Terzett mit Dean Martin zu „The Oldest Established“, Loretta Lynn fehlt jegliches Rhythmus- und Taktgefühl auf „All Or Nothing At All“ und „My Kind Of Town“ zusammen mit Tony Bennett klingt schlichtweg langweilig und uninspiriert.

Einzig „I Get A Kick Out Of You“ mit Natalie Cole kann vollends überzeugen und auch der “September Song” mit John Denver kann gefallen – wenn man sich nicht zu sehr auf John Denver fokussiert.

Ein Special mit kaum einem Glanzpunkt.
