THE FIRST 40 YEARS
1979

The 78 minute show from Caesars Palace to honour both Sinatra’s 64th birthday and his 40th year in showbiz was recorded by NBC on December 12, 1979. Over 1000 colleagues and friends came to celebrate with Sinatra.

The show has various greats paying tribute to the man, such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis jr., Gene Kelly, Robert Merrill, Don Rickles or Paul Anka. At the end of the show Sinatra sings 5 songs and last but not least the whole audience cantillates “Happy Birthday” together with Tina Sinatra, Jimmy Van Heusen, Sammy Cahn and Cary Grant.

Seeing the special once is enough. Sinatra’s singing is above suspicion but alas for the main time of the special Sinatra is just an auditor.

1979

Die 78-minütige Show aus dem Caesars Palace zu Ehren Sinatras 64. Geburtstag und seinem 40. Jahr im Musikgeschäft wurde am 12. Dezember 1979 von NBC aufgenommen. Über 1000 Kollegen und Freunde waren gekommen, um mit Sinatra zu feiern.

Die Show besteht aus zahlreichen Tributzollungen wie etwa durch Dean Martin, Sammy Davis jr., Gene Kelly, Robert Merrill, Don Rickles oder Paul Anka. Gegen Ende der Show singt Sinatra selbst 5 Songs und zu guter Letzt intoniert der ganze Saal zusammen mit Tina Sinatra, Jimmy Van Heusen, Sammy Cahn und Cary Grant „Happy Birthday“.

Mehr als einmal und der Komplettheit halber muss man das Special nicht gesehen haben. Sinatras Gesangspart ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben, nur leider erlebt man Sinatra den Großteil des Specials über lediglich als Zuhörer.
