Sinatra Around The World

SINATRA - AROUND THE WORLD!

by Bernhard Vogel

Preface: A World-Wide Symphony

On January 15, 1976, about a month after his 60st birthday, Frank Sinatra was appearing in concert at the legendary „Caesars Palace“ in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the show, he introduced to his audience a new song in his repertoire written by Bruce Johnston. It was called „I Sing The Songs“, and it was to serve as the singer’s semi-autobiographical signature song for the following two years. Its lines told the truth, especially with the refrain: „I sing the songs that make the whole world sing“.

He came, sang, and conquered: Frank Sinatra, whose extraordinary vocal and lyrical talent will possibly forever remain unchallenged in the field of popular music, has won the hearts and souls of millions of people around the globe, and will continue to do so, through the legacy of hundreds of timeless recordings forever preserved on record and tape. With the exception of one album (“Great Songs From Great Britain” recorded in London 1962), all of the 1200-plus studio songs were done in the U.S. – the albums and singles, however, have been reproduced and re-released, and played, in all parts of the earth. Scratch any music lover and you’ll find a Sinatra fan: It’s Sinatra’s world – we just live in it !

But there is another dimension to this familiar saying. Especially in his post-retirement years, Sinatra toured tirelessly around the world, appearing in countries throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, South Africa and South America, in front of millions of people. More often than not, these performances provided his many fans from several countries outside the U.S. with the unique chance to witness „Sinatra In Concert“ – and Sinatra, as all of us know, was a singer who had to be experienced. Like his albums and singles, his concert apperances form an essential part of the Sinatra legacy.

This new series will focus on Sinatra’s international visiting and concert schedule, and related stories, from the early days to 1994, country by country, in alphabetical order. Aside from providing some glimpses at stories behind the scenes, each section will try to list dates and venues of each individual Sinatra performance through the years, including information (as far as available) on programme details, participating musicians and official recordings/broadcasts.

I am indebted to various people and Sinatra researchers who through their publications and/or through personal contact have provided me with several pieces of information used to compile these articles. You will find a list of publications here, while personal credits are to be found with the article(s) in question.

Naturally, an undertaking such as this one can possibly never be really complete. So if you have anything to add to any of the parts that are already online, please feel free to contact me via E-Mail .
